What is the mastery stat?

About Mastery #

Mastery, a primary stat, is relevant to all roles though it plays a particularly important part in the overall performance of DPS and healing classes. Mastery replaced stats like Aim and Strength in 4.0. It is the stat you tend to have the most of in both capped and uncapped content.

Mastery is found on most gear, including armorings, mods, implants, earpieces, some augments, and some stims and relic procs.

Mastery increases the effectiveness of your attacks and heals by:

  • boosting your bonus damage by 0.2 per point
  • boosting your bonus heal by 0.14 per point
  • increasing your critical chance; this tends to wind up around 12%.

Capped Content #

As of game update 6.0, content is divided into capped level 70 and uncapped level 75 content. Because of the way that bolster and level sync works in SWTOR, your Mastery stat will be different in level 70 than it is in level 75 content, even if your gear stays the same. But unlike power, if you enter an operation with less mastery than it is capped to in that level of content, you will only have the mastery you have equipped.

Before buffs, Mastery is capped at 7284 for DPS and Healers, and 7242 for tanks in story mode content. That number is determined by the discipline your character has chosen when you enter a phase.

If you change your discipline inside, your stats adjust in most cases – but it’s important to check. If you notice that you move from DPS to Tank without a change in your Power stat, you should exit the phase, respec, and then re-enter. Changing from a DPS to DPS or Healer to DPS and the like does not, in most cases, require players to exit.

If you are only gearing for level 70 content, you can ignore your Mastery stat as endgame gear (currently level 306) puts you far over the maximum cap. You can focus on maximizing your tertiary stats instead.

Uncapped Content #

If building for uncapped level 75 content, you can simply ensure you choose the right mods and enhancements for your class and the content. Additionally, DPS and healers can swap out the relics they use in capped content (typically Devastating Vengeance and Primeval Fatesealer) for power and mastery relics like Focused Retribution, Serendipitous Assault or Boundless Ages.

Boosting Mastery #

You can boost your Mastery stat by utilizing gear, relics and consumables that increase this stat. Most of these are temporary or, in the case of capped content, irrelevant.

  • Stims: Versatile stims boost your Power and Mastery stats. Note that you will want to avoid these stims in capped content and utilize Proficient stims instead.
  • Adrenals: No adrenals boost your Mastery stat.
  • Relics: Focused Retribution relics boost your Mastery on a random proc. In capped content, you will want to sub it out for a Critical (Devastating Vengeance) or Alacrity (Primeval Fatesealer) relic.
